A major change seems to be taking place in Iran at the moment. Mass demonstrations have been taking place for weeks. What began as protests against the poor economic situation has quickly grown into widespread, large-scale opposition to the Iranian regime. How does the Christian community view these developments, and what role do they play?
Harsh government response
Large demonstrations against the Ayatollahs’ regime have taken place in Iran before, but they were quickly quashed with brute force and countless arrests. The Iranian government is also responding harshly at this time. Security forces are responding with mass arrests and lethal force. Protesters have been murdered, injured and imprisoned, but the call for freedom continues undaunted.
The oppression of Christians also continues. Security forces treat converts and leaders of house churches as propagandists and threats to national security. This is punishable by severe prison sentences. According to Article18, the government portrays Christians as ‘foreign agents’, even referring to ‘Mossad mercenaries’. This pattern has continued during these large-scale uprisings.
National hope
Iranian Christians view the protests primarily through the lenses of justice, human dignity, and peace. Like the rest of society, they are severely affected by the oppressive reality of the Islamic regime. Persian-speaking Christians have no recognised churches or other places to gather. They are treated as second-class citizens and live under constant pressure and surveillance. They have a deep and personal desire for change in the country.
Motivated by Jesus’ message, Christians emphasise non-violence and charity in accordance with their conscience. While they do not always participate in demonstrations themselves, they wholeheartedly support this grassroots movement.
The demonstrations in Iran are not being viewed by Iranian Christians as a religious uprising, nor as a chance to defend the Christian faith or promote Christian interests. Rather, they view it as a national uprising — a united call to reclaim their country, human dignity, and future, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background. Those who participate do so primarily as Iranian citizens, driven by a commitment to justice and freedom for all.
Christians participate through prayer, solidarity and peaceful action. In this way, they peacefully strive for a society characterised by equality, responsibility and respect for human life, rather than domination or exclusion. Iranian Christians are not outside the movement for change, but at its heart – rooted in faith, guided by their conscience and united by a shared national hope.
